HX5, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, is seeking an early to mid-career engineer to provide modeling, simulation, and analysis support to the EPFD (Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration) team that supports the development of electrified aircraft propulsion projects at NASA GRC.  The candidate will support the definition of aircraft concepts primarily by using modeling approaches to assist in the analyses.  In addition, the candidate will act as the interface between EPFD industry partners and academia in order to facilitate the transfer of proprietary modeling data.  In this role, the candidate has the responsibility of summarizing and representing proprietary data so that it is useful for the academic modeling team.  In addition, NASA and DOE are collaborating on research for battery development for electrified aircraft applications.  The candidate will support developing battery performance requirements to facilitate this research.


The selected Systems Engineer will support the Aeronautics and Ground-Based Systems Branch at NASA GRC, which is responsible for systems engineering leadership and system architect leadership to enable aeronautics programs and projects as well as ground-based programs and projects involving the application of NASA technologies.


Required Skills: 

  • Experience with systems engineering principals and processes such as those used by NASA, DoD, or similar organizations.

  • Experience with requirements development with application to space-based projects preferred

  • Experience or knowledge of verification and validation practices with application to space-based projects preferred

 Other Desired Skills:

  • Experience and background in conceptual modeling and studies of aircraft which use Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) in electric, hybrid, or turbo electric modes.

  • General knowledge of aircraft megawatt class electrical power and energy storage subsystems in order to create models which estimate weights and losses for conceptual aircraft trades.

  • General knowledge of aircraft thermal management subsystems in order to create models, which estimate weights and losses for conceptual aircraft, trades.


  • Masters degree and 0-3 years of experience or Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of experience.


*Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

**Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the position.
