Summary:


 


This position will have primary responsibility for the application of measurement science, mathematics, physics, and engineering to design and develop systems, equipment, and methods used by the Field Service organization worldwide in the calibration of dimensional, mechanical and thermodynamic devices. This includes technical content, adherence to quality and metrology principles and standards (e.g. ISO 17025), and final documentation.  The new procedures will be based on existing ISO or ASTM methods and standards, so the ability to understand, in detail, existing standards and translate them to practical application is critical.  The final methods must pass technical and quality audits by an external lab accreditation agency.  Candidate will interact with Manager of Calibration Operations for technical direction, key Instron field engineers for their input, and software engineers as required.  Candidate must develop thorough understanding of the relevant methods and equipment through research and hands-on operation of the equipment.  Takes project direction directly from the Manager of Calibration Operations.


 


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


 




  • Develop and document procedures and equipment necessary to implement new calibration services to be delivered by our field service engineers.



  • Develop and document procedures and equipment to expand our in-house calibration labs capabilities and reduce our reliance on outside vendors for calibration.



  • Develop detailed technical specification for calibration equipment to be used by our field service organization for the delivery of our calibration services.



  • Perform measurement uncertainty analyses in compliance with international standards



  • Support and improve existing procedures and documentation used by service engineers to perform calibrations in the field.



 

 



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


 





  • Engineering degree or other technical degree with sound mechanical aptitude.



  • Possess a detailed understanding of and an ability to apply the concepts of metrology, measurement uncertainty analysis, and related statistics.



  • Typical experience 2-5 years working with processes, engineering or quality documentation.



  • Proficiency with Excel spreadsheets as a method of collecting, analyzing, and reporting calibration data is a plus.



  • Excellent organization, attention to detail and writing skills.



  • Ability to translate existing standards into procedures and methods that can be readily implemented by a widely dispersed field organization.



  • Very advantageous if already experienced in ISO 17025 practices and development of ASTM or ISO based calibration methods.





 



Working Conditions:



 



Normal plant environment with some exposure to dirt, noise and grease, operational equipment, and the hazards associated with the application of Force Measuring Instrumentation.
